"To Quench a Thirst" Documentary Series

An engaging new documentary series highlights the major events in the San Diego region’s on-going quest for safe and reliable water supplies. The three-part series provides a compelling, 13-minute overview that chronicles the search for water from  the indigenous people through decisive actions by area leaders to develop the region’s diversified water supply portfolio and robust infrastructure that today sustains 3.3 million people and a $220 billion economy.

The three-part video series was made possible by a grant from The Hans and Margaret Doe Charitable Trust.

History Video Series (3rd-4th grade)  

  • San Diego County: History and Growth - Third Grade
    In this short video, historical photos are woven into a story designed to motivate third-grade students to learn more about the communities in which they live. Students learn that water played a major role in the development of San Diego and that contributions by people of all races helped shape the region's unique history.

  • California: A Changing State - Fourth Grade

This video series follows the adventures of five students as they explore the history and geography of California. Through the use of special effects, their stories are told in five short videos, each addressing a different era. The videos also show how water played a key role in the development of California.

Be WaterSmart Video (4th-6th grade)

  • In this entertaining video, students, armed with water-saving tips, involve their parents in a class contest to see which family can save the most water. By watching this video, your students will learn simple ways to save water inside and outside of their homes.

Metropolitan Water District of Southern California 

Materials and Programs 

MWD provides water education programs for students from kindergarten through college, including supplemental materials, teacher resources and classroom presentations throughout Southern California. These materials and programs teach students about the importance of water quality, water-use efficiency and conservation. All of MWD's educational programs correlate to the California Content Standards for each grade level in the areas of science, mathematics, language arts and social studies.
