Imperial Valley Office
The San Diego County Water Authority’s Imperial Valley outreach office opened in January 2005 to provide enhanced communication in a region that includes San Diego and Imperial counties in light of the 45-year to 75-year water transfer agreement between the Water Authority and the Imperial Irrigation District.
The Imperial Valley outreach staff includes longtime Imperial Valley resident Darren Simon, who joined the Water Authority as a senior public affairs representative January 1, 2008, and Grace Sesma, who continues to serve the outreach office as a consultant.
The outreach office is part of the Water Authority’s Colorado River Programs, which monitors issues pertaining to the Quantification Settlement Agreement, including the water transfer agreement and the All-American Canal lining project.
The outreach office serves as a bridge linking the Water Authority and the Imperial Valley. The outreach office staff serves as a liaison between the Water Authority, the Imperial Irrigation District, and the Imperial Valley.
The Water Authority maintains membership in the El Centro, Brawley, Calexico and Imperial chambers of commerce. It also is a member of organizations, like the Imperial Valley Economic Development Corporation and the Imperial Valley’s P-16 Council college-going education initiative.
The Water Authority is partnering in such programs as the Imperial Valley Economic Development Corp./San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp. Mega-Region Grant initiative, an effort aimed at attracting industrial development to a region that includes both the Imperial and San Diego counties to promote the economic strength of the mega region.
Along with partnering in key programs, the Water Authority sponsors community events, such as the California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta, the Imperial Valley Economic Development Summit, the Brawley Cattle Call Rodeo and Parade, and the Mariachi Festival in Calexico.
